Coronavirus: Jamaica On High Alert As Death Toll Rises To 81, Disease Spreads

The Ministry of Health says itโ€™s on high alert for the Chinese based Wuhan coronavirus. 

Portfolio Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, says that measures are being put in place to detect and combat the virus, which has already affected hundreds of people in sections of China, and other countries around the world.

He says the Ministry is consulting with the World Health Organizationand the Pan American Health Organization, to learn more about the nature of the virus, the symptoms, and treatment.

The coronavirus causes illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, MERS,  and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, SARS.

Signs of infection include fever, cough, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing.

In more severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and death.
