Stay Safe and Secure Online

There are precautions you can take to stay safe and secure online. To protect sensitive information and your devices, the National Cyber Security Alliance recommends you do the following:

· Fortify each online account or device. Enable the strongest authentication tools available. This may include using biometrics, security keys, or unique one-time codes sent to your mobile device. Usernames and passwords are not enough to protect key accounts, such as e-mail, banking, and social media.

· Keep a clean machine. Make sure all software on Internet-connected devices – including PCs, laptops, smartphones, and tablets – is updated regularly to reduce the risk of a malware infection.

· Personal information is like money. Value it. Protect it. Information about you, such as purchase history or location, is just as valuable as money. Be mindful of who receives this information and how it’s collected by apps or websites.

· When in doubt, throw it out. Cybercriminals often use email or websites to try to steal your personal information. If something looks suspicious, delete it.

· Check for website security. Check the security settings on websites before sharing any information. Make sure you see https or a little lock symbol in the website address bar.

For questions about securing sensitive information, please contact the Information Security Team at [email protected].
