Two McKnight Men Charged For Shooting Incident At Football Match.

St. Kitts and Nevis (May 30); Two men from the McKnight area have been charged with the shooting incident that happened during a football match at Warner Park on Saturday (May 27) that left one person injured.

Charged are Lewis Powell and Dequan Maloney of Upper Shaw’s Avenue.

The men stand charged with causing grievous bodily harm and making use of a firearm to commit a felony.

The incident occurred around 7:25pm while an SKNFA final four match was underway.

Reports from the scene indicated that two men were seen approaching the football venue from the eastern side of the Stadium. Shortly after they gained access to the seating area on the side of the football field adjacent to the cricket stadium.

Patrons reported seeing one of the individuals pull a weapon that looked like a gun and discharging at least three rounds at one of the spectators.

As spectators scrabbled to escape what they assumed was gunfire, the two individuals reportedly left the venue the same way they had entered.

Police arrested the suspects that same night.

Police reported that the ‘shooter’ had discharged a pellet gun, and not a firearm.

The shooter’s alleged target, Amal Whyte of Trafalgar Village, sustained an injury to his foot whilst trying to escape the melee. WINN FM understands he had been grazed on the torso by one of the pellets, but sustained a fall while running from the area which aggravated an already broken foot.

The incident caused the SKNFA officials to call off the game in progress and postpone the second match, both of which were played the next day.

After the incident, SKNFA president Anthony Johnson apologized to patrons over the traumatic experience and condemned the act of violence during a national sporting event. He said additional enhanced security measures have been put in place at the football stadium during matches to ensure the safety of patrons and members alike.

Minister of Sports, Deputy Prime Minister also condemned the incident, pointing out that the government continues to do its best to ensure the safety of citizens.
