HURRICANE WATCH
A Hurricane Watch has been issued for St. Kitts and Nevis as Tropical Storm Maria moves into the area. A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions, including tropical-storm-force winds and flooding, are possible within 48 hours somewhere within the watch area.
During a watch, community members should make storm preparations and review any emergency plans in the event a storm warning is issued.
According to the latest update, the U.S. National Weather Service shows the center of Tropical Storm Maria was located 12.3 North, Longitude 52.6 West or about 650 miles southeast of St. Kitts and Nevis. Maria is moving toward the West near 20 MPH. A slower west-northwest motion is expected during the next couple of days. On the forecast track, Maria is expected to approach the Leeward Islands on Monday. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 50 MPH with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is expected during the next 48 hours, and Maria is forecast to be a hurricane when it approaches the Leeward Islands early next week.
