PM Timothy Harris tells St. Kitts and Nevis
consumers “Only one-discounted VAT day”

Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 29th 2017 – For the second consecutive year the Timothy Harris-led Team Unity Government has refused to give consumers in St. Kitts and Nevis two VAT days as happened under the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party administration.

“The one VAT day is for the well to do as this government only wants those rich and well to do to purchase vehicles and other big ticket items,” said a store clerk in Basseterre, who wished her name not be used.

“Two VAT days under Labour and Denzil Douglas allowed the small man and woman who are employed in the large businesses an opportunity of an hour or two on one of the two days to do some shopping. We ladies like to shop for ourselves and our children. That is impossible now under this grabberment,” said P.S.

“This government of Timothy Harris is not for small people, never was and never will be. I work up the factory and we get half an hour for lunch each day. What can me and my girls do in half an hour? Struppes……we really want back Uncle Douggie,” said Alicia.

The Labour Government of Dr. Denzil Douglas first introduced a No Vat Day. Discounted VAT (Value Added Tax) days in 2013 were on December 5 and December 19.

In 2014, Dr. Douglas continued the tradition and announced two discounted VAT days – Friday December 12th and Friday December 19th.

President of the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Jose Rosa said they requested two discounted VAT days but the Dr. Harris and his Team Unity Government said no, only one discounted VAT Day will be given this year like last year.
