MP Liburd to Minister Hamilton: “Tell the Nation if you have an interest in an insurance company”
Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 16, 2017 – A call has been made for St. Kitts and Nevis’ Minister responsible for housing to declare whether he has an interest in what appears to be a new company offering insurance to owners of National Housing Corporation (NHC) built homes.
Chairman of the opposition St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), Hon. Marcella Liburd told listeners to Wednesday’s “Issues” programme on Freedom 106.5 FM that persons who own NHC homes are being constantly called by a male person, who is not a known employee of NHC, who informs them that their insurance is in arrears and they must visit his office to discuss an insurance policy.
“Where did this gentleman get the names of owners of NHC houses? Where did he get their confidential information from? asked Liburd.
She said persons who contacted her have not received a written letter from NHC.
“They do not know who this gentleman, who constantly calls them,” she said.
“I am calling on the Hon. Eugene Hamilton, the minister responsible for housing to tell the public and explain what is really happening with respect to the insurance of these NHC houses,” said Liburd, who expressed concern over information on the streets.
“They want to ask Mr. Hamilton and I too, want to ask him whether or not he has a personal interest in this insurance company? People want to know how is it that this individual can call and request NHC homeowners to come to the individual’s office to take out new insurance policies,” said Liburd.
She said NHC homeowners must be able to choose an insurance company of their choice.
“Persons feel disrespected that no official from NHC has contacted them,” said Liburd.
Mr. Hamilton is a former general manager of British-American Insurance Co. Ltd (BAICO) in St. Kitts and a director of the Trinidad-based CLICO Insurance.
