OPENING OF THE ST. KITTS NEVIS NATIONAL CARNIVAL A HUGE SUCCESS!
Saturday 18 November, 2017 (St. Kitts & Nevis) – The St. Kitts Nevis National Carnival Committee (SKNNCC) launched a successful Sugar Mas 46, last evening, Friday 17th November at 7:00 p.m. in The Circus, Basseterre. The crowd gathered long before the start of the Opening in anticipation of what we call a “night to remember.” The HMP Band serenaded the audience with their melodious renditions, prior to the Introduction that was beautifully done by Mrs. Marissa Hobson-Newman, Deputy Chairperson of the Carnival Committee.
Subsequently, brief remarks were given by Mr. Noah Mills, Chairman of the SKNNCC, followed the official Opening of Carnival that was ably done by the Hon. Shawn Richards, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister responsible for Carnival. Mr. Troy “Biff” Mills, Director of Culture, presented a Patron of Carnival Award to a stalwart in the music industry, Mr. Mellie Hewlett. As the night unfolds, the participants and contestants in the various shows were formerly introduced along with the random picking by sponsors in this year’s carnival. The contestants in the National Talented Teen Pageant and the Teenage Junior Calypsonians were revealed following the picking of contestants by sponsors. The moment that we all were waiting for was finally here; the Female Calypso Competition! Our host for the Show was Ms. Rhoma Spencer out of Canada. Nine (9) ladies vied for the title of St. Kitts Nevis Female Calypso Queen. The Criteria was as follows: • Lyrics – 40 points • Music – 30 points • Performance – 30 points Total – 100 The SKNNCC congratulates Kimara Williams (Lady Diva) who placed 2nd with 377 points, with her song “The Elders,” Karisia Willett (Miss Independent) who
placed 1st with 383 points, singing “Where is the Leadership.” And our newly crowned Calypso Queen for Sugar Mas 46, Kendra Hutton (Brown Sugar) with a total of 392 points with her song “Just Another Day.” The night climaxed with some hit songs performed by the Reigning Calypso Queen of Canada, Macomere Fifi, our Guest Artiste. The SKNNCC takes this opportunity to thank all who came out and supported this Launch. We also thank Rev. Dwane Cassius for invoking God’s blessings upon us. We also say many thanks to the HMP Band and to King Honesty for their great performances. Thanks to Macomere Fifi and to Rhoma Spencer for embracing us with their presence. Last but not least, we extend a hearty thank you and congratulations to all the participants in the Female Calypso Show; thanks to the media, our sponsors and the hard working SKNNCC volunteers.
