DR DOUGLAS DODGES ST KITTS PARLIAMENT

There was a huge outcry as pandemonium riveted across social media this week when the Opposition Leader Dr Denzil Douglas continued to dodge the St Kitts parliament. Citizens were alarmed that Dr Douglas, according to the press secretary of the Prime Minister, had appeared to have hastily chartered a plane and headed to Dominica.
This stunning information comes on the heels of the accusation levelled at Dr Douglas by St Kitts and Nevis Minister of National Security and Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris, that Dr Douglas, as Leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition, is the holder of a Dominican diplomatic passport.

Attorney General the Honorable Vincent Byron has also revealed that he has “initiated instructions to senior counsel in the legal department to begin proceedings in this matter to determine whether the member for number six, Dr Denzil Douglas, should vacate his seat or not.
By law parliamentarians in the federation are given one week notice for the sitting of the Honorable House but despite the one week’s notice, it is reported that Dr Douglas has given the National Speaker of the House, the Hon Michael Perkins just 15 minute notice of his intention to absent himself from the Honorable House.
Concerns raised on social media are:
1. Whether Dr Douglas did not attend the parliament to avoid answering questions on the passport matter.
2. Whether or not Dr Douglas can renounce the Dominican diplomatic passport he allegedly has without suffering the consequences.

Commentators on social media generally were of the view that Dr Douglas’ hasty departure from the federation is an indication that the passport allegation is causing him some discomfort.
