PM Harris security officer threaten alledged to arrest Bishop holding cross outside Government Headquarters
Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 6, 2017 – Religious freedom was alledged to be under threat Wednesday when a member of St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris’ security detail attempted to stop a pastor from praying outside Government Headquarters.
Bishop Cyprian Williams of the New Birth Gospel Tabernacle in Cayon, who was standing on the sidewalk on the opposite side of building said the police officer told him that he cannot demonstrate outside Government Headquarters on Wednesday morning.
“He said two things. One, he can take me to the hospital and say that I am mentally unstable or two, arrest me for obstructing (disturbing) the peace or for protesting without a license. I told him I am not protesting; that I am just here in prayer,” said Bishop Williams.
Bishop Williams, who was carrying a large cross wrapped in a white cloth with two red ribbons on each extending end said the officer also told him that he needs to write to the Commissioner (of Police) “to get permission to be here.”
Police were heard telling the Pastor and another church member that they cannot stand in front of Government and suggested that they walk down the street and return but they must be moving.
Bishop Williams was seen making several trips around Government Headquarters while Prime Minister Harris was presenting the 2018 Budget Address in the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly.
Bystanders expressed shock and dismay that it now appears “illegal” to walk with a placard outside Government Headquarters pointing out that Dr. Harris himself and members of his Team Unity also mounted protests during outside Labour Administration.
“I remember Mr. Dupont holding a Bible, saying that he was reading Douglas out of office and no one disturbed him. I remember Washy Archibald with a placard demonstrating too. I also remember Terry Adams also demonstrating as well,” said the female bystander.
Officers also attempted to prevent drivers from seeing the bishop with the cross and by parking an unmarked security vehicle in front of them.
