MP Maynard: “Solid plan, not empty platitudes will assure the safety of nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis”

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 7 2017 – With the approach of the Carnival and Christmas Season, West Basseterre Parliamentary Representative, Hon. Konris Maynard said residents and businesses are justifiably concerned over the continued increase of crime.

Maynard said crime continues to be a major concern of the citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis as in recent days law enforcement have had to deal with armed robberies at the Amory Bakery and Vibes Bar in St. Kitts and a shop in Craddock Road in Nevis, the murder of Nevis businessman, Lincoln Liburd and a St. Kitts youth, Theon Audain and the removal of all furniture from a cottage in Mattingley Heights

“Crime is a difficult problem to deal with. It is of no help when you have a Prime Minister who wants the public to believe that crime is trending down when the figures and reality show a completely different picture. We must be reminded that there was a near 60% increase in crime in 2016 over 2015. Break-ins increased by over 71% from 242 to 415. Larcenies increased by 81% going from 215 in 2015 to 390 in 2016. With the known events of 2017, it is clear that there has been no significant decrease in these figures. The question then is, what point plan are we on now? Is it 12, 6, 5 or none,” Maynard said at a Labour Party press conference.

He said that instead of empty platitudes from an out of touch Prime Minister the public needs to hear and see a solid plan that assures their safety.
