West Basseterre Constituency Office to be
restored to full use says MP Konris Maynard

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 7, 2017 – West Basseterre Parliamentary Representative, Hon. Konris Maynard has given his constituents the assurance that he will work to restore the full use of his Constituency Office following a fire of still unknown origin on November 27.

“The building was completely insured and we are awaiting the instructions from the insurance before we proceed with its restoration,” said Maynard at a press conference.

.
The constituency office was built in 2014 to serve the needs of the constituents.

“It has been doing just that since then. Since the general election in 2015, my office has remained opened to the general public five days a week during business hours and available for use for all things related to serving the constituents of West Basseterre and even beyond. The office includes a private consultation office, an administrative open area, a full bath, a storage room and a generous meeting hall,” said Maynard.

He told reporters that through the vigilance of surrounding neighbours he was alerted of the fire and the Fire & Rescue Services quickly brought the flames under control.

“There was extensive damage to the conference hall of the office. In particular, the northern part of the eastern wall was burned right through. The roof in that area was seriously damaged. All of the interior walls of the hall have been damaged to varying degrees. The A/C units are completely damaged. Labour Party paraphernalia and electrical fixtures have been destroyed. The Hall is unusable in its current state and the office section of the building suffered minor cosmetic damage,” said Maynard, who was overseas at the time.

He disclosed that the police have indicated that they are now waiting on the report from the Fire Department to proceed with their investigation.

“Additionally, they have also advised on a number of persons whom they wish to receive statements from. These persons have been notified. I can confirm at this moment that part of their investigation will include review of closed circuit surveillance footage of the environs. I wish not at this time to divulge what they have picked up thus far. I will wait for their conclusions on what was or was not captured,” said Maynard.

“There is a strange coincidence of fires starting around 2 and 3 am for offices of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party representatives. Recall that the Hon. Marcella Liburd’s campaign office was set ablaze around 2 or 3 am on election morning,” he noted.

He gave thanks be to God that there were no injuries to anyone and expressed sincere thanks to the surrounding neighbours for their vigilance in alerting very quickly the Fire Department of the fire thus averting what could have been the total destruction of the constituency office building.
