Taiwan Foreign Minister to visit St. Kitts and Nevis after meeting in St. Lucia with PM Chastanet and Cabinet

Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 31, 2018 – Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), His Excellency Dr. Lee Ta-Wei is to visit St. Kitts and Nevis, a reliable source in St. Lucia said Wednesday.

According to the source in Castries, Dr. Lee will visit St. Kitts and Nevis from February 2 to 5 after he completes an official visit to St. Lucia.

Former Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas made several Official Visits to Taipei and has met with then presidents Chen Shui-bian and Ma Ying-jeou, who made State Visits to Basseterre.

Two Taiwan presidents, foreign ministers and Special Envoys have visited Basseterre during the Douglas administration.

In 2005, then ROC President Chen visited St. Kitts and Nevis and addressed the opening ceremony of the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association 12th Annual Conference and Trade Show and signed a joint communiqué with Prime
Minister Douglas at the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park.

In February 2013, Taiwan’s Foreign Affairs Minister David Yung-lo Lin visited St. Kitts and Nevis and held talks with Governor General Sir Edmund Lawrence, Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and Minister of Justice, Legal Affairs, International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Hon. Patrice Nisbett and other members of the Cabinet.

In August 2013, then President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), His Excellency Ma Ying-jeou paid a State Visit to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis at the invitation of then Prime Minister the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

In May 2016, President Ma visited Belize for his final call to the region just before he demitted office later that month.

Ma was succeeded by Taiwan’s first female president, Tsai Ing-wen. who visited some allies in the Caribbean in 2017. St. Kitts and Nevis was not on her itinerary.

During the visit to St. Lucia from January 30 to February 1, the Taiwan Foreign Minister has been meeting with St. Lucia’s Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Economic Growth, Job Creation, External Affairs and Public Service, Hon. Allen Chastanet and the Cabinet of Ministers.

St. Lucia and Taiwan also signed an Agreement on Police Cooperation and the Foreign Minister will visit the town of Soufriere.

The delegation includes Mr. Chou Lin, Director General of Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs, MOFA and resident ambassador H.E. Douglas Shen, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to St. Lucia.
