KONRIS GETS SCHOOLED BY WINNFM REPORTER

The Hon Konris Maynard should have learned his lesson well that he should not speak on topics that he knows nothing about. During the St Kitts Labour Party monthly Press Conference held on January 31st 2018, a young brilliant reporter Elsie Harry, who seems to be very knowledgeable in economics, challenged the Hon. Konris Maynardโ€™s statement where he compared St Kitts-Nevis to that of Afghanistan.

Miss Harry, who had done her research and having recognized that Mr Maynard didnโ€™t know what he was talking about, went after him hard. โ€œMr Maynard you spoke about the GDP declining from 7% to 1.9%. Earlier this month I checked out commonwealth scholarships and I realized that St Kitts-Nevis is no longer on the list of countries to receive commonwealth scholarships because those scholarships are for low to middle income countries, how do you account for that?

The Hon Labour representative for constituency number 3, shocked by the riveting question stuttered. โ€œThat is a different standard!โ€ this response was so embarrassing to the labour party that part of Miss Harryโ€™s question was wilfully removed from the face book video recording.

The blank stare of contempt on the reporterโ€™s face was enough to encourage Mr Maynard to try again. He courageously pulled himself together and tried again. โ€œNow you can have a high income per capita for instance but your GDP is in the negative because you are declining…We could have a high growth rate of 10% but we are a low income state, we are gonna have benefits of scholarships and so on. Then you can have a negative GDP growth and be a high income state and not get anything at all.โ€
Dr Douglas having recognized the incompetence of his colleague, attempted to give his explanation to the seemingly perplexing question. Miss Harry, having recognized the embarrassment her question was causing, quickly said, โ€œIt is ok, I understand.โ€

The following is an effort to teach Hon Konris Maynard a thing or two about economics since he is vying for political office. Negative growth refers to a contraction in earnings. It is also used to refer to a contraction in a country’s economy, as was evidenced by the decrease in our gross domestic product (GDP) during the years 2009 (0.97), 2010 (2.87), 2011 (0.85) and 2012 (0.78). Negative growth is typically expressed as a negative percentage rate in brackets.
From a St Kitts perspective, positive economic growth means an increase in not just our money supply, but also in our economic output and productivity. The opposite of positive growth is negative growth which Dr Douglas has taught us well and it is used to describe the performance of declines in earnings.
