Government owned no land at Friar’s Bay

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 8, 2018 – Land at Friar’s Bay on St. Kitts’ South East Peninsular was never owned by any government, said former Minister of Health, Hon. Marcella Liburd.

Providing the facts to the misleading, erroneous and deceptive statements by Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris at his recent press conference, Liburd disclosed that the Wigley Family sold the South Friar’s Bay land to the Bank of Commerce in the late 1970’s.

“Soon after our independence under the PAM Government of Dr. Kennedy Simmonds. Dr. William “Billy” Herbert, who was then St. Kitts and Nevis’ Ambassador to the United States and Permanent Representative to the United Nations brokered a deal with a wealthy Kuwaiti, Kutayba Alghanim, to buy it from the Bank of Commerce in 1984.

Mr. Arthur Sharpe bought less than 10 percent of the land in late 1980’s and received permission from the PAM Government to build.

Dr. Harris and the St. Kitts Investment Promotion Agency (SKIPA) knew since early last year that the new land owners wanted to develop the property.
