assailant jailed for 8 months hours after

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 16, 2018 – Valentine’s Day was not a happy one for an Australian visitor to St. Kitts.

Police said Katherine Mccumbie was injured during an attempted robbery on Wednesday while walking along Horsford Road about 10:15 a.m.

She was accosted by a young man who tried to take her bag. Resisting the assailant punched her in the face and ran.
A passer-by assisted Mccumbie, who sustained injuries to her face. She was taken to the J.N.F. General Hospital where she was treated for her injury.

Police who were alerted to the attack, later identified the assailant as 19-year-old Akeem Sage of Upper Thibou Avenue in Basseterre.

Mccumbie was scheduled to leave the Federation on Thursday, February 15, Sage was taken before the Basseterre Magistrate Court Wednesday afternoon, where he pleaded guilty to the offence of wounding.

He apologised to the Court and the victim and was sentenced to eight months in prison with hard labour.

“The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force wishes to thank all those who were involved in ensuring that justice was served swiftly in this matter. Where there is co-operation, crimes like these, and others can be quickly detected and criminals can be caught, charged and convicted in a timely manner,” police said in a statement.
