SCASPA Will Be Sold Before Our Very Eyes!

Prime Minister Timothy Harris and his coalition government have gone too far with their greed and deception, which have been the main reasons for the careless mismanagement and loss of our local resources and assets.

Before we [Kittitian and Nevisians] know it, all that we call our own will be placed in the hands of international investors for far less than what they are actually worth.
Time after time, the Opposition St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party has done its part to speak up and out on these immoral, ravenous and unprecedented acts by the government despite the ‘fight down’ from the sitting Ministers and Speaker of the House, Michael Perkins, Harris’ trusty puppet.
Against the democratic rights of the Opposition members, as well as the rights of the greater electorate, Speaker Michael Perkins is leading the Harris-led government’s campaign against the Opposition by attempting to silence and abusing the rules of the House.
Just this week, veteran politicians and members of the Opposition benches, Hon. Nigel Carty and Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas were barred from speaking in the House. This was as a result of the speaker misusing and construing the rules of Parliament to silence the opposition and ultimately disguising the truth of the St. Christopher Air and Sea Port Authority (SCASPA) Amendment Bill 2018.
Within that same sitting, with one foot already out the Parliament’s door, Hon. Konris Maynard was suspended. Though the Speaker did not carry out the suspension correctly, this was all a part of their plan to pass the SCASPA (Amendment) Bill 2018 without much Opposition scrutiny.
It was a deliberate effort on the Speaker’s and the government’s part not to have the Opposition heard seriously criticizing the government on a matter that threatens the fundamentals of democracy in St. Kitts and Nevis.
What Harris and his cabal didn’t want the opposition to reveal is their plan to ultimately sell SCASPA.
Within the sitting, the government reworded the clauses and in the end, removed the protection clause which served to prevent SCASPA’s properties from being seized.
The essence of the legislation sets out how SCASPA should function when it is given the opportunity to independently borrow money.
Naturally, when one borrows money, there would be penalties if they fail to meet the specific payment requirements of the arrangement.
Prior to the government’s amendment of the bill, the clause protected SCASPA in the case of any default to its obligation to a lender. It highlighted that the lender, upon going to court, could not just simply seize the assets of SCASPA in order to repay the debt.
This was the protection clause that the Harris-led government has since REMOVED.
Now, if SCASPA defaults on the repayment of any of the four large loans taken to construct the second cruise pier, its assets are up for grabs by the creditors.
This is the information Timothy Harris did not want the people to hear and did not want to be recorded in the minutes of the House.
It is not right!
It is to this end why Harris is dodging the questions inquiring of his intention to sell SCASPA to private entities.
This cannot continue!
