More water woes for residents of St. Peter’s,
New Road, Gillards, Pine Gardens and Shadwell
Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 18, 2018 – More water woes for residents of St. Peter’s, New Road, Gillard’s, Pine Gardens and Shadwell.
One month after a period of water rationing in February, the Water Department on Sunday announced a new schedule when water will be available to residents of those areas.
Former Minister of Public Utilities in the previous St Kitts-Nevis Labour Government Dr. Earl Asim Martin said St Kitts would have had an additional 2.5 million gallons of potable water daily during the drought period if the new Minister of Public Utilities, Hon. Ian Patches Liburd, had not put a hold the contract with BEAD – Bedrock Exploration And Development – bwhen he took office in mid-February 2015.
Last month, Lennox Liburd, a staunch supporter of the Peoples Action Movement/Team Unity Government, publicly accused Minister Ian Patches Liburd on a radio talk show which the Minister hosts, of being responsible “for the unfortunate situation where residents in a number of areas suffer from an adequate supply of potable water.”
Lennox Liburd stated that after three years of the Team Unity Government, the wells that BEAD found cannot be connected to the St. Kitts Water System as a result of a dispute between BEAD, Minister Liburd and Ocean Earth Technologies, the new company the Team Unity Government hired under a similar water drilling contract.
Lennox Liburd said he is aware as a fact that BEAD found water in Shadwell and Old Road and was waiting on Minister Ian Liburd to approve the connection.
