SKNSA STUDENTS MAKING WAVES AT UWI CAVEHILL

Over the past few years, the students of the St. Kitts-Nevis Students’ Association (SKNSA) have always been seen as some of the most quiet students on campus. However, our SKN youth have made it their mission to break barriers and ensure SKNSA’s presence does not go unnoticed at UWI CaveHill for the academic year 2018-2019. Our youthful nationals, bubbling with creativity and intellectuality, have managed to secure executive positions on some of the campus’ most prestigious bodies – from the Guild of Students, to Hall Executives and even the executives of clubs and societies. They have sprinkled themselves across the campus to ensure that the student body and school administration recognises that we may be small but we definitely are tallawah!

For the past year, De-Jono Liburd held the Librarian position on the Guild of Students as the only SKN individual on the Guild of Students. However, for the upcoming year, two products of our soil will sit on the Guild of Students; Dennis McCall Jr and Siobhan Phipps. Dennis, former SKNSA President and CARICOM Youth Ambassador was elected as the International Affairs Committee Chairperson on the Guild of Students; and Siobhan Phipps, former Public Relations Officer for SKNSA and local YouTube sensation is now the newly appointed Public Relations Officer for the Guild of Students.

At the same time, our SKN Blackbirds, have also secured seats on the Councils of Sherlock and Frank Worrell Hall. Kamau Grant, SKNSA’s newly elected Cultural Officer is also the new Fundraising Officer for the Sir Phillip Sherlock Hall, whilst Hasani McDonald, newly elected SKNSA President, and Kamil Wilkin, SKNSA’s Treasurer for a second term, have both devoted themselves to serve the Frank Worrell Hall as Constitutional Chairperson and Treasurer respectively, for the upcoming academic year. Additionally, Kamau, is also the newly elected President of the Debating Society here at the UWI CaveHill Campus. Kamau, along with Dennis represented SKNSA in the Debating Society’s Annual Debating Competition and emerged successful capturing the winning title.

SKNSA’s efforts are not only recognised at CaveHill, however SKN students also sit on executives in various capacities at the other two UWI campuses, UWI Mona and St. Augustine. Every year, our students aim to shake UWI and the region at large, with our local SKN zest and passion, and it is clear that they have done so, remembering “Country Above Self” as they all wish to serve and improve the campus life of the CaveHill Students, and work to develop our region’s youth leaders.
