Laptops For Students- Unity’s ‘Trash’ Kamla’s Treasure
Opposition Leader of the United National Congress movement in Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has chosen to take few pages from the progressive book of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party with regards to the development of her country’s nationals and advancing their opportunities in education.
Just this week, Mrs Persad-Bissessar promised to improve the educational sector in T&T by providing free laptops to students and grants for students and single-parent homes.
This is despite Kamla’s allegiance and apparent contribution to the PAM/CCM/PLP’s campaign in the lead-up to the 2015 general elections. It is obvious that the T&T Opposition Leader has recognised the importance as well as the great benefits to be achieved from such an initiative.
The laptop programme being promoted by the T&T opposition leader falls directly in line with the One-To-One Laptop programme implemented by the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party which saw students of every secondary school in St. Kitts and Nevis, receiving computers to assist in their studies.
The program was terminated by the present Timothy Harris-led coalition government after the elected ministers; more so, Minister of Education Hon. Shawn Richards saw no importance in the initiative.
While students in St. Kitts and Nevis continue to struggle academically and creatively due of the absence of this technology, others around the region and world are relishing the many opportunities and benefits derived from having access to computers.
