Nepotism in the Attorney General Chambers
Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 25, 2018 – The on-going question of nepotism continues with the appearance of Talibah Byron, the niece of the Attorney General, Hon. Vincent Byron to represent her uncle although there are several lawyers in the Attorney General Chambers and the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs.
Ms. Talibah Byron appeared and spoke on behalf of her uncle, the Attorney General during the two hearings in the matter involving the Leader of the Opposition, the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.
Ms. Byron interacted with Justice Trevor Ward on behalf of the Attorney General, while the Government’s General Counsel, Mr. McClure Taylor and the Attorney General sat in Court room last Friday.
The Attorney General’s law firm was also a part of the legal team that represented him in the civil matter the Attorney General filed against the then Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Travers Sinanan a few months after the Team Unity took office.
Minutes before the hearing in the High Court in September 2015, both parties announced a settlement which included a hefty financial compensation.
The amount has never been made public due to a confidentiality clause in the agreement although several sources said the compensation ranged between EC$1.5 million and EC$2.5 million.
Chairperson of the opposition St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) and Parliamentary Representative for St. Christopher 2 (Central Basseterre), Hon. Marcella Liburd levelled charges of “political interference with the justice and the judicial system.”
