Opposition Leader Chastises Government For Not Living Up To Their Campaign Promises
Former Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, now Leader of the Opposition, Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas has called out Dr. Timothy Harris and his government for allegedly fooling the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
Speaking at the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party’s Press Conference yesterday May 2nd, Dr. Douglas referenced a number of promises Dr. Harris made while in opposition to the electorate.
“They said they would have the Freedom of Information Act; They said they would place the SIDF (Sugar Industry Diversification Fund) funds into the consolidated funds; They said there would be greater empowerment of our citizens who are living abroad in the Diaspora through the functioning, proper staffing and financing of the Constituency Empowerment Department in the Office of the Prime Minister…”
These promises were categorized as the top priority actions and policies that Harris and his colleagues will implement if elected to government.
Disappointingly, as highlighted by Dr. Douglas, now three years after, the PAM/CCM/PLP government has failed to keep their word, and deliver any of their promises to those who elected them and to the wider community of St. Kitts and Nevis.
“Have these really been the government’s first order of business?” asked Dr. Douglas, who continued to state that rather than advancing the people of the Territory, the Timothy Harris-led government has focussed on enriching themselves and their families.
“The real first order of business for this government is the filling of the pockets of ministers of government and their friends and their families; especially the Prime Minister (Timothy Harris) who has virtually placed every single member of his family in high positions, filling his pockets and their pockets. This has become the first order of business of this coalition government.”
Persons of the community have begun to question Prime Minister Harris as to his promises made, recognizing that the firsts has become last, or worst, will never come to pass.
