Dr. Drew praises nurses; slams two health ministers for no address to open Nurses week
Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 10, 2018 – The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) candidate for St. Christopher 8, Dr. Terrance Drew has assured nurses in the federation that an new Labour Party administration will fully respect their profession and provide the necessary climate to improve their personal and professional development.

Dr. Drew expressed his disappointment on Wednesday that the two ministers of Health in St. Kitts, Hon. Eugene Hamilton and Sen. the Hon. Wendy Phipps, did not deliver the tradition Official Message on Sunday or Monday to declare Nurses Week open and to express gratitude to the local nightingales for their service to the people of the twin-island Federation.
“I cannot accept the continuing poor treatment and disrespect by the two health ministers toward the nurses and their profession as well as their contribution to the health sector,” said Dr. Drew, an internist.
He recalled that the junior minister of health, Hon. Wendy Phipps in an address to mark Nurses Week a few years ago, accused the nurses of stealing.
“This was totally disrespectful. This year there is no official address and it appears that nothing is taking place,” said Dr. Drew who disclosed during the weekly “Issues” programme that the nurses have organised a number of activities to mark Nurses Week.
He called on the general public to support the nurses who are experiencing “tremendous difficulties, not only at the J N France General Hospital, but also those at the Pogson Medical Center in Sandy Point, the Mary Charles Hospital in Molineux and the health centres around the island.”
Dr. Drew said the health and nursing profession lacks “poor leadership from Hon. Eugene Hamilton and Sen. the Hon. Wendy Phipps.”
A “Nurses in Splendour” Ball will take place on Saturday 12th May and further information can be had from the St. Kitts Nurses Association by calling 669-8482 or 662-2407.
