GOVERNMENT’S PROPERTY OWNERSHIP PROGRAMME TO IMPROVE LIVING CONDITIONS FOR CIVIL SERVANTS

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 22, 2018 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – The Team Unity-led Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is putting the needs of civil servants at the forefront of its development agenda with the announcement of an EC$30 million housing and property ownership programme, specifically targeted at Government employees.

Addressing hundreds of citizens and residents at an Open Forum at the Edgar T. Morris Primary School on Sunday, May 20, Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris emphasized that his Team Unity Administration is focused on delivering for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“That is why this year we announced how we will get homes to the civil servants,” Prime Minister Harris said. “Police officers, prison officers, teachers and nurses working in government departments wanting to get a house, we say that we would make $30 million available in the first instance to help you.”

The new housing and property ownership programme will come on stream effective Friday, June 1, 2018. The first tier of EC$15 million would be invested in the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis for lending at 5 percent.

Prime Minister Harris stated that under this programme, civil servants will be able to access up to EC$300,000 to facilitate property ownership in the country and the upgrading of homes, adding, “If you want to add on another bedroom, the funds are there for that; if you want to add on something for your daughter or your son, the funds are there for that; if you want to buy and pay off for your land, the funds are there for that.”

Any amount beyond the $30,000 maximum will be negotiated on the Development Bank’s applicable terms.
