March to restore good name of St. Kitts and Nevis, PM Harris “MUST GO”
Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 24, 2018 – Citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis were urged Wednesday to continue to call for the resignation of the Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris by participating in a planned public demonstration on Friday 25, May. The March starts at 3;30 p.m. at Greenlands.
“This is not a march for supporters and members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party,” said Leader of the Opposition, the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.
“This is a march for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis who believe that their elected representatives and minsters of government whether here in St. Kitts and Nevis or on duty overseas should act with the highest of integrity and to show full accountability at all times to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis,” said the former prime minister.
He said all fair-minded citizens who believe that the name of St. Kitts and Nevis is important to you and all citizens and residents “should join the march on Friday.”
Prime Minister Harris has become embroiled in an alleged bribery scandal in the United Kingdom.
The scandal has already claimed one casualty, Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Investment and Trade, Hon. Michael Asot, who like St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister is named in a judgement in the British High Court, in which British property tycoon Peter Virdee is accused of bribing St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister and Michael and other Caribbean politicians. Michael tendered his resignation from the Cabinet of Prime Minister Hon. Gaston Browne, but Harris has said he will not quit.
Last week, placard bearing demonstrators calling for Harris to resign stood outside Harris’ Church Street office forcing him to stay away for several hours.
During this week, graffiti aimed at adding pressure on Harris to quit has appeared in several locations in Basseterre and its environs.
“Tim must go,” “Harris must resign now,” “Tim resign now,” are the messages scrawled in orange – the colour of Dr. Harris’ Peoples Labour Party (PLP).
