Opposition Leader Douglas and German diplomat Michael discuss local, regional and global issues

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 24, 2018 – A new St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) Government will pursue a robust social and economic policy that will lift the people of the twin-island federation and lend support to similar projects in the regional, hemispheric and international organisations.

Leader of the Opposition, the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas used the opportunity of a courtesy call from Germany’s Ambassador to St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency Holger Michael to trace the Labour Party’s transformation of the local economy from 1995 to 2015.

The German diplomat also received an assessment of the relationship between St. Kitts and Nevis and Germany.

Issues discussed included derricking and correspondence banking, climate change, sports and Germany’s candidature for a seat on the United Nations Security Council.

Ambassador Michael pointed out that Germany is the third largest financier to the world body in New York and “takes its responsibilities seriously for the benefit of the global order.”

He also outlined new regulations by the European Union and the OECD in combatting money laundering, tax evasion and illegal financial transactions.

Mr. Michael said it was important for ongoing dialogue and used the opportunity to give Berlin’s commitment on the issue of climate change to St. Kitts and Nevis, the OECS, CARICOM and CARIFORUM.
