MORE HOMES BEING MADE AVAILABLE TO THE PEOPLE OF ST. KITTS AND NEVIS UNDER A TEAM UNITY GOVERNMENT
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, June 13, 2018 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – It was another day of celebration today (Wednesday, June 13) for 15 more families as the Team Unity Government, through the Unity Housing Solution Programme, distributed 15 of the 16 newly constructed houses at Stadium View, Sandy Point to residents; effectively bringing to 31 the number of new homes delivered to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis in just two days.
Several of the homes were constructed on privately owned lands under the National Housing Corporation’s (NHC) building assistance programme, which falls under the Unity Housing Solution scheme.
The keys to the new homes, which are located at Stadium View, Sandy Point, were presented to the new owners during a ceremony held earlier today, and which was attended by Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris; Deputy Prime Minister and Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Five, the Honourable Shawn Richards; Minister of Human Settlement, the Honourable Eugene Hamilton; officials of the National Housing Corporation (NHC); and family and friends of the recipients.
Prime Minister Harris congratulated the new homeowners and noted that the Team Unity Government remains committed to working in the best interest of the citizens and residents who, in February 2015, ushered in a change to the political and economic landscape of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The prime minister said, “We are a caring government. We live among you, we hear you, we understand you and we are responding in thoughtful ways to improve the quality of life for all the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.”
“You need the special intervention of the government and the government has been standing with you and for you. That is why very early in our term we took the decision to make the payment of mortgages more affordable. We reduced the interest rate from a high of seven or eight percent to as low as two percent for those who were least able to pay for them,” Dr. Harris stated.
Prime Minister Harris added that under a Team Unity Administration, the future of St. Kitts and Nevis is brighter, and noted that in the area of property and homeownership the Government’s record is unmatched, referencing the HELP programme and the recently introduced $30 million dollar mortgage programme for government employees.
“The rate which we are offering at the Development Bank for this particular homeownership programme is the best rate in the country [and] in the Caribbean,” Dr. Harris proclaimed.
The first tier of EC$15 million was invested in the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis for lending at 5 percent.
