EMPLOYEES WHO WORK ON SEPTEMBER 16, 17, AND 19, WILL BE ENTITLED TO DOUBLE PAY

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 11, 2018 (SKNIS): The Federal Department of Labour in St. Kitts and Nevis is reminding employers and employees that any work performed on September 16, 17, and 19 of 2018, which are public holidays in the twin-island Federation, will attract double the normal rate in respect for the hours that are worked.

Sunday, September 16, is National Heroes Day. However, on the grounds that the day falls on a Sunday, the public holiday will be celebrated on Monday, September 17.  Wednesday, September 19 is Independence Day, which also is a public holiday.

The rate of pay is outlined in The Statutory Rules and Orders, No 35 of 2008, The Labour (Minimum Wage) (National Minimum Wage) Order 2008, which says the overtime rate to be paid to a worker for a public holiday, is double the rate in respect of the hours worked.

Persons seeking clarification on the law are encouraged to visit the Department of Labour on St. Kitts located on the 2nd floor of the Amory Building, Victoria Road or call 467-2079/2072, 662-2075, or 762-1029. In Nevis, the department can be found on Main Street, Charlestown, telephone 469-5521.
