ENERGY MONTH ZEROS IN ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 06, 2018 (SKNIS): In commemoration of the CARICOM Energy Month 2018, Minister of Utilities, the Honourable Ian “Patches” Liburd, said that the government is zeroing in on energy efficiency in the public sector.

“Our ministry has been a key player in the Bureau of Standards’ Regional Energy Efficiency Building Code project and also in the Ministry of Environment’s Electric School Bus pilot project,” said the Minister, while adding that these projects will help to make the federation more environmentally friendly.

The Minister stated that there is currently an energy audit being conducted at sixteen (16) government buildings to determine measures that can be taken to make the buildings more energy efficient.

In addition to the energy audit, he announced that street lights in St. Kitts and Nevis will be replaced with Light-Emitting Diode (LED) lamps starting early next year.

“This is an energy efficiency measure that is expected to result in reduced fuel consumption and lower costs for SKELEC, and by extension, consumers,” he said, noting that the LED Street Lighting project is slated to launch later this month.

He noted that the ministry will be having a number of activities throughout the month of November in order to spread awareness, as well as to educate the public on being energy efficient.

Activities for the month include the ministry’s appearance on the Government’s weekly programme, “Working For You,” on November 07; LED lamp giveaways on November 16 and 30; presentations to various schools throughout the nation; and an Energy Walk on Saturday, November 24, to name a few.

“I take this opportunity to invite each of you to support and participate in the activities of Energy Month and also to become familiar with the issues surrounding energy use within the Federation,” he stated.
