There is no substitute for one-on-one contact with constituents says PM Harris

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, November 26, 2018 (PLP PR Media Inc.) — Prime Minister and Area Parliamentary Representative for St. Christopher Seven (Belle Vue to Ottley’s) Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, who is celebrating the 25th anniversary since he was first elected to parliament, is sharing with the public the secret of his political success.

At the end of a ‘meet and greet’ walkthrough in Phillip’s Estate Yard on Friday November 23, Dr Harris said: “There is no substitute for this kind of one-on-one contact with the constituents where they live, on their own terms, and in their own places. We value the opportunity to meet with them.”

Prime Minister Harris, who is also the National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party (PLP), one of the three parties in the Team Unity Administration, was accompanied by members the Constituency Number Group. They were joined by Senator Akilah Byron-Nisbett who is the Deputy National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party.

“This is part of the continuing outreach that has been organised as part of the celebratory activities commemorating the 25th anniversary of my tenure as MP for Number Seven,” said Dr Harris. He commended the Planning Committee for the 25th Anniversary Celebrations for the good ideas that emerged in the planning process which led to such activities continuing in a sustained way.

Prime Minister Harris noted he was delighted that all the persons they met in their homes were very welcoming. He observed that at the last elections, Phillip’s Village was one of the better performances with as much as 80% of the electorate voting in his favour. While commending them, he said he was happy that the bonds still continue to be very strong.

The walkthrough, the Prime Minister commented, was particularly memorable with Senator Akilah Byron-Nisbett joining them, showing solidarity and support, while building her own knowledge of those kinds of exercises. As she conducts similar activities that she becomes the next elected member for St. Christopher Three, she could count on a robust support from the people of Constituency Seven, and the entire country as they begin the process of mobilisation in her favour.

“I want to say a special thank you to you Senator for coming out this evening, for being a part of this exercise,” said the PLP Political Leader. “My advice in this is critical. This is important as this is where the rubber meets the road. This is where meaningful dialogue and engagement comes which allows you to see in the hearts and in the minds of the constituents, and to be able to respond.”

The Honourable Prime Minister thanked all who participated in the walkthrough, noting that it was Friday which is normally a busy day but they took time to join him. He thanked the constituents for their continued action observing that despite going on day after day, one could see that they still had energy to participate.

“This whole 25th anniversary provides a meaningful opportunity for me to reflect and to record the deepest possible appreciation for persons who have been a reliable bulwark of support consistently over a period of twenty five years,” said Dr Harris. “This was unimaginable when I started out seeking the support of the people. For their enduring support this far, I have to feel a deep sense of indebtedness which inspires me to do further service.”
