NHC ENSURES EMPLOYEES WORK SPACES SUITABLE FOR DAY TO DAY OPERATION – NATIONAL HOUSING CORPORATION (NHC)

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, NOVEMBER 30th, 2018 — The National Housing Corporation, NHC, responded quickly to mold spores speculations in its work spaces. Approximately 4 weeks ago, Air Quality Testing was initiated as a result of perceived signs of spores.

The results of the tests returned on Tuesday 29th November, and a meeting was held immediately with NHC’s management team, all employees and subsequently with the Director of the St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards (SKNBS), Mr. Hiram Williams, to provide an update on the status of the results and for immediate remedial actions. Several discussions were held prior with other members of the SKNBS.

Based on the results uncovered, educational and corrective measures were implemented including but not limited to, thorough cleaning of interior and exterior buildings such as walls and furniture using appropriate cleaning solutions and chemicals, cleaning of all air condition units, engagement with engineers and contractors, among other measures.

According to Director Williams, mold is found almost everywhere, including outdoors, and is generally caused by moisture from air condition units and water trapped in walls.

Following the deep cleaning on buildings, which is scheduled for Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd December, a follow-up air quality testing and assessment will be done for further analysis and determination of the way forward.

The Hon. Eugene Hamilton, Minister with responsibility for NHC, along with members of the NHC Board has adopted an urgent approach to remedying this matter and has guaranteed that no cost will spared in an effort to ensure that the health and safety of each employee is top priority.
