PRIME MINISTER OF ST. KITTS AND NEVIS PURSUES EFFECTIVE DIPLOMACY ON VENEZUELA

 

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, January 27, 2019 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – CARICOM Chairman, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis is leading a delegation of CARICOM Heads to a special meeting with United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, regarding the political stalemate in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the heightened sense of insecurity in the region.

Prime Minister Harris, on Thursday, January 24, presided over an Emergency Meeting of colleague Heads, which resulted in an agreement on the way forward. The consensus statement provided the blueprint for CARICOM diplomatic engagement as a region on the volatile hemispheric issue.

At Thursday’s meeting, CARICOM Heads asked Prime Minister Harris to lead a delegation to the United Nations to expeditiously address the situation.

Dr. Harris is being accompanied to the high-level meeting by Prime Minister Allen Chastanet of Saint Lucia, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley of Trinidad and Tobago and CARICOM Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LacRoque.

The CARICOM delegation will meet with the UN Secretary General at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 28, 2019.
