AVEC HOSTS “EPIC” TRADE FAIR TOMORROW, THURSDAY
Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 03, 2019 (SKNIS): Approximately 50 students in their final year of studies at the Advanced Vocational Education Centre (AVEC) in St. Kitts are set for the 2nd Annual EPIC Trade Fair that will be held tomorrow, Thursday April 04, 2019, at the institution’s premises at Taylor’s. It will run from 3 to 7 p.m.

EPIC stands for Elevating Potential, Imagination and Collaboration, and was created to give students an opportunity to implement the practical knowledge and skills gained during their studies.

As such, the trainees as they are also referred to, developed a marketable product or service and pitched the business idea to a panel. This year’s presentation was done on January 16. Once the proposal was approved, the trainees turned their attention to getting a business license from AVEC, mobilizing resources and capital where necessary, and opening the company’s door to the public.

Seven companies were created and have been operational for the better part of the last 10 weeks. Each company is representative of the seven areas of study at the centre. The Cosmetology Department created a store called “Lavish Beauty Bar” that sells original products such as hair oils. The company also offers beauty services. The Food Preparation Department established “A Taste of Liamigua” that gives patrons an opportunity to eat meals using traditional ingredients such as cassava. After a hearty meal persons can stop by Lazen-NIA for desert. The Business Studies students opened this company to sell treats such as cakes, pastries and sundaes.

The Electricity Department started E-Tech, which focuses on the repair of electrical items. The Automotive Department trainees developed Fix Aid, which offers car washes, vehicle diagnostics, car servicing and the like. The Data Service Department opened Computer Trust that prepares documents for clients such as typing SBAs and other documents, book keeping and more. And finally, the General Construction Department created Quality Building Repairs that provides handyman services.

The general public is encouraged to visit AVEC for tomorrow’s Trade Fair during the 3 to 7 p.m. event. They are also encouraged to support the businesses that will be in operation up to June 30. The companies’ performance will then be assessed and awards presented in a number of categories at the centre’s annual graduation ceremony for AVEC enrolees. The graduation is expected to be held in mid-July 2019. Awards include most viable business, most profitable business, best business plan and best business pitch.

EPIC was inspired by the US television show “Shark Tank.” The local contest embraces AVEC’s motto: “Develop a Skill, begin a Career.”
