Speaking at the House Handing Over Ceremony for Winnifred O’Loughlin, Ann Wigley said, “Where she lived was not only unsanitary and unsightly, but it was also woefully inadequate in providing her with shelter – a basic human right!”
Mrs. Wigley added, “Indeed, the conditions in which she lived flew in the face of human dignity and posed serious challenges to upholding physical and mental health, as well as her self-esteem, and also severely compromised her overall quality of life. The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights says at Article 25, which is Food and Shelter for All, that, ‘We all have the right to a good life. Mothers and children, people who are old, unemployed or disabled, and all people have the right to be cared for.'”
The Acting Director of Community Development and Social Services also said that, “Today, we can say that Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris and his Government have done a lot to support equal rights, equal dignity and equal opportunities for all.”
Mrs. Wigley further stated that, “Traditionally vulnerable populations such as children, the differently abled, the elderly, the poor, women, and the unemployed all deserve to have access to the care and services that can help them live healthy, independent and productive lives.”
