Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris On the Occasion of Eid al-Fitr
June 5th, 2019
Eid (the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast) marks the end of Ramadan, the most sacred month in the Islamic calendar, which is dedicated to fasting, praying, almsgiving and making personal sacrifices.
The Eid Festival not only brings Ramadan to a close, but it opens up feelings of gratitude and joy as families and friends get together to pray, share meals, enjoy each other’s company and exchange sweets, gifts, good wishes and the traditional greeting Eid Mubarak, which means “Have a Blessed Eid!”
On behalf of the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis, I extend warmest greetings and best wishes to you and yours at this very special time.
My Team Unity administration and I espouse tolerance and respect for all religions and cultures, and embrace and endorse the values that Eid al-Fitr celebrates and upholds, such as love and charity.
Indeed, the donations of food to the poor – referred to as sadaqah al-fitr (charity of fast-breaking) and which signal the approach of Eid – also send the powerful message that the common thread that binds us, no matter our faith, is the responsibility we all have to love and care for one another.
May your Eid al-Fitr be filled with love and wonderful memories.
