BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, June 25, 2019 (PLP PR Media Inc.) — Ministry of National Security’s breaking ground for the $2.4 million Explorers Campsite Building in Phillips Village on Monday June 24 is being viewed as a boon to the village’s economy, as the contractor is from the village and most of the workforce will be sourced from the village.
Area Parliamentary Representative, Prime Minister and Minister of National Security Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, who participated in the ground breaking ceremony noted it was an important day for one of the smallest communities in the country, Phillips Village, to have one of the largest investment, $2.4 million, being invested in the community.
In congratulating the people of Phillips Village who will have a direct impact from the result of the activity, the Honourable Prime Minister noted that it was significant for a small community in terms of capital projects that will take place, and for all who will have jobs at the facility.
The building, which will also serve as the headquarters for the fast growing Explorers Youth Clubs Movement whose first club (Mol-Phil) was launched at the same venue in July 2017 as part of the Ministry of National Security’s Crime Reduction and Prevention Strategy, will be constructed by a local contractor Mr Myron Percival of M & D Construction Services who is a church elder in the Seventh Day Church.
“We know since he is the pastor who is doing this handy work, we shall have special blessings,” quipped Prime Minister Harris as he introduced Mr Percival to the gathering which included Cabinet Ministers, the Hon Eugene Hamilton, the Hon Ian Patches Liburd, and the Hon Vance Amory; Cabinet Secretary Mrs Josephine Huggins; National Security Advisor Major General (Ret.) Stewart Saunders; and Acting Commissioner of Police Mr Hilroy Brandy.
Giving an overview of the project, Chief Engineer of Public Works Department, Mr George Gilbert said that the building which will cost $2,475,442.20 has a construction time period of 240 calendar days. Work starts immediately and the contractor has been paid ten per cent mobilisation fee. He said the project was an opportunity for Mr Percival to excel, and that way he (Gilbert) would recommend him for more jobs.
The ceremony was chaired by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Mr Osmond Petty. Others present included Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China on Taiwan, His Excellency Tom Lee; Lt Col Anthony Comrie of the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force; Assistant Commissioners of Police, Mr Andre Mitchell, and Mr McCarta Browne; Forces Chaplain Pastor Ericson Cumberbatch; Police Force Personnel Officer Mr Clifford Govia; Crime Reduction Specialist Dr Neals Chitan; and members of the Community Policing Team.
