JEFFERS FOUND GUILTY ON TWO COUNTS OF UNLAWFUL COMMUNICATION
Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 18, 2019 (RSCNPF): Shermel Jeffers of Gillard Meadows who was charged with three counts of Unlawful Communication was found guilty on two counts after her appearance at the Basseterre Magistrate Court on July 15.
Jeffers was sentenced on the first charge in the sum of $3000 to be paid in 14 days or six months imprisonment. On the second charge, she was bound to keep the peace for one year and bonded $6000 for the same period.
The offences were committed between June 27 and 28, 2018 where the communication was transmitted via WhatsApp which is a messenger application that uses the internet to send messages, images, audio or video. The case was tried under Section 14.1 of the Electronic Crimes Act, under the sub-heading “Unlawful Communication.”
Unlawful Communication is a serious offence that can make a person liable for conviction. Persons can be fined up to $15,000 or face up to two years imprisonment for this offence. Persons are asked to familiarize themselves with the legislation and be guided accordingly.
