SKELEC TO EMBARK ON VITAL SOLAR PROJECT AS PART OF ITS RENEWABLE ENERGY THRUST
The Honourable Ian Patches Liburd

Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 30, 2019 (SKNIS): The St. Kitts Electricity Company Limited (SKELEC) is set to embark on a vital solar project as part of its renewable energy thrust according to Minister with responsibility for Energy, the Honourable Ian Patches Liburd, during the Sitting of Parliament on July 30.

Minister Liburd was at time speaking to SKELEC’s signing of a power purchase agreement for the commencement of a solar project, which is expected to be initiated shortly.

“This solar project Mr. Speaker is not only important to the future development of our country but is the potential life saver of the financial security of SKELEC. It will avoid fuel cost, and the expected fuel avoidance cost from the installation of this solar farm will not only be beneficial to the energy demand of this Federation but is potentially the only viable option at this time to keep SKELEC afloat moving forward.”

The energy minister added that several other initiatives are also on the horizon. He noted that these initiatives “may help to ease the decline, such as the “prepaid… initiative or as it is called, pay as you go”.

“This will allow SKELEC, Mr. Speaker, to recoup monies upfront for electricity consumption which can have a positive effect on its cash flow,” said Minister Liburd.

The solar project was signed with Leclanché SA. According to information on the company’s website, https://www.leclanche.com, Leclanché is a world leading provider of high quality energy storage solutions, based on lithium-ion cell technologies, accelerating our progress towards a cleaner energy future. Leclanché is the only listed pure play, energy Storage Company in the world and is listed on the Swiss Stock Exchange.
