Justice for Mark Twain
Who would have thought that the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis would be at this juncture yet again? Recently, a letter was sent from the Nevis Air and Seaport Authority (the “Port Authority”) to the operators of Mark Twain informing them that Mark Twain has to rotate its schedule with immediate effect (with a new ferry operator by the name of MV Patience). While I have no objections to a rotating schedule, I found the decision to be unjust, vindictive and discriminatory.

Mark Twain is one of the few ferry operators that have provided consistent service within the federation of St. Kitts and Nevis over the years; while others have left or have recently joined the market. Our question remains why is Mark Twain been forced to operate on a rotating schedule while the other operators remain on a permanent schedule?

As recent as yesterday, the Ticket Agent for Mark Twain arrived to sell tickets for their 10am trip to St. Kitts, however the Port Authority locked their gate, which restricted Mark Twain Ticket Agents from entering their facilities to sell tickets. A similar incident occurred today, as the Ticket Agents were confronted with barricades been placed around the ticket booth. The irony of this matter, is that no notice and no warning were provided to the operators of Mark Twain informing them of the Port Authority’s intention. Is this the value we place on trade in this Federation? Is this the way in which we foster small business growth and development in this Federation? Is this the way we recognise businesses who have made significant contribution to the economic development of this federation?

Again, why is Mark Twain been victimized? Why are the other operators allowed to operate on a permanent schedule and not Mark Twain? In the final analysis this behavior appears to be one of a personal vendetta. We are therefore calling on the Nevis Government to rectify this matter with some level of urgency. We are also calling on the Nevis Government to immediately discontinue any practices that would create an unfair competitive environment and to refrain from practices that would most likely compromised trade within the federation.
