CASES OF ABUSED MEN ARE UNDER-REPORTED; DEPARMENT OF GENDER AFFAIRS ASKS MEN TO SEEK HELP

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 12, 2019 (SKNIS): As the domestic abuse of men often goes unnoticed and is sometimes held in contempt, the Department of Gender Affairs has reassured the male population who suffer abuse at the hands of women and men that they should find the confidence to come forward to report their abuse so that they can be helped.

This was stated by Director in the Department of Gender Affairs, Mrs. Celia Christopher, during the radio and television show “Working for You” on September 12.

“We do see cases of [male abuse] in the Department of Gender Affairs … but you see the thing is, men’s pride get in the way, and so, a lot of these instances are underreported,” said Director Christopher.

She emphasized that the Department of Gender Affairs is there to serve the citizens of the Federation and that the legislation does not differentiate between men and women, but instead it speaks to the victim.

Director Christopher ended by saying, “Whoever the victims are, whether male or female, a grandmother, a child or whoever, once you are being abused, the department is there to help you.”

The department’s mission, as stated, is to ensure that the policies and programmes of the state, take into consideration the impact on men and women, sharing equally in society.
