PAM endorses candidacy of PLP’s ‘Ninky’ Williams for Constituency Number Six

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, May 19, 2020 (PLP PR Media Inc.) — The people’s Action Movement (PAM) has in the past general elections fielded a candidate for St. Christopher Number Six, but in the spirit of unity it is supporting a candidate from sister-party the Peoples Labour Party (PLP) in the June 5 elections.

“Traditionally the People’s Action Movement we have had a candidate in this constituency and even as part of Team Unity during the election of 2015 we had a candidate in this constituency,” Leader of the People’s Action Movement, and Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Shawn Richards said on Monday May 18.

The PAM Leader was at the time welcoming to elective politics, Mr Kevin ‘Ninky’ Williams of the Peoples Labour Party who will be Team Unity’s candidate for St. Christopher Six which has traditionally been held by the Labour Party.

“It wasn’t an easy decision in terms of yielding to PLP, to run a candidate in Constituency Six,” said the Hon Richards. “We are a Team Unity and at the end of the day whoever runs in Constituency Number Six on behalf of Team Unity is basically representing all of the Team Unity parties.”

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the act of PAM allowing the PLP to run a candidate for the seat in the forthcoming general election sends a message that indeed the Team Unity Parties are united in terms of contesting this general election. The other party in Team Unity is the Nevis-based Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM).

“Perhaps it is historic that he is also being introduced on the very same date that the election has been announced,” said the Hon Richards, in reference to Prime Minister Harris’ national address on Monday at 12:30 pm when he announced the date of the general election. “But it could make history in more ways than one.”

The ceremony which was held at Willett Great House in St. Paul’s was also attended by the National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party and Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris and other senior PLP and PAM officials. The all-important but brief ceremony observed social distancing and wearing of facemasks as per SR&O Number 16 of 2020, Emergency Powers (COVID-19) Regulations.

Appealing to the people of St. Paul’s to support Mr Williams, the Deputy Prime Minister said: “You have one of your very own. It therefore should not be difficult for you to sell this individual to persons from the constituency. You have seen him, you have worked with him, you have grown up with him, he is one of you, and so you should be extremely comfortable in canvassing on behalf of Mr Williams. He is from right here in the St. Paul’s community.”

He added that he believed within themselves they have the resolve and fortitude to ensure that at the end of the day, they feel satisfied that they have given it their best and the results reflect in particular what they and their campaign have put into the election. He observed that the opposition party does not appear ready for the elections even after they would have asked for the elections for a long period.

“That is not our concern,” said the Deputy Prime Minister. “Our concern is to ensure that Team Unity returns to Government and we are confident that Team Unity returns to Government.”

He said in conclusion: “I say finally to you the supporters that a victory for Team Unity is a victory for all of us. You the persons who are putting the work, but more importantly a victory for the people of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis who have stated that Team Unity is taking this country forward, and they are satisfied with the job that Team Unity has been doing.”
