NEW VIEWING DECKS AT BLACK ROCKS ADD TO THE ATTRACTIVENESS OF THE POPULAR TOURIST SITE, SAYS PM HARRIS 

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, July 16, 2020 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – A short but significant ceremony was held on Wednesday, July 15, at Belle Vue to dedicate and officially open the viewing decks at the popular tourist site, Black Rocks – the latest in a series of infrastructural upgrades that has significantly transformed and increased the attractiveness of the site. 

Thenew viewing decks form part of a wide-ranging rehabilitation project being built out under a joint partnership between the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Whitegate Development Corporation.

Speakingat Wednesday’s ceremony, Prime Minister and Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Seven, in which the Black Rocks site is located, stated that, “This multi-tiered, open-air observation platform is a significant investment in the improvement of the Black Rocks visitor experience, as it enables tourists and locals alike to safely and comfortably view the dramatic jagged black cliffs that were formed by lava eruptions from the now-dormant 3,792-ft Mount Liamuiga.”

“Indeed, this stunning new amenity signals that Black Rocks is being taken seriously as a world-class landmark and one that has the potential to extend the benefits of tourism to this community and those in its vicinity,” Prime Minister Harris added. 

Otherupgrades to the area that materialized as a result of the partnership between the Government and the Whitegate Development Corporation include the construction of vendor booths; the installation of infrastructure such as roads and drainage systems; the general rehabilitation and landscaping of the grounds; the placement of signage and outdoor furniture, and the building of a Barbecue Pavilion with seating and dining areas. The Black Rocks site is also wheelchair-accessible.

Theprime minister added, “With its upgraded ambience, Black Rocks adds to the list of places to go on the island, not just on holidays or special occasions, but just because there are more features now to enjoy and local vendors here to support at this iconic, historic site.”

Thenewly constructed washrooms at the tourist site were also commissioned during Wednesday’s ceremony. 

Amongthose in attendance at the ceremony were the Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Lindsay Grant; the Honourable Akilah Byron-Nisbett; the Honourable Jonel Powell; CEO and Managing Director of the Whitegate Development Corporation, Mr. Ellis Hazel, and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Carlene Henry-Morton.
