St. Kitts Water Services Department to Host World Water Day Outreach Events in March

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 18, 2021 (Ministry of Public Infrastructure and Utilities et al): In celebration of World Water Day, the St. Kitts Water Services Department (WSD) at the Ministry of Public Infrastructure will host World Water Month outreach events throughout March to promote public awareness through the publication and diffusion of documentaries and the organization of conferences, round tables, seminars, and expositions related to the conservation and development of water resources. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Valuing Water.”
Guided by the theme, this year’s activities will showcase the ways in which residents can learn more about water quality, safe drinking water, water conservation strategies, wastewater, and the impacts of drought.

“Each year, the St. Kitts Water Services Department (WSD) uses the month of March to raise awareness of the importance of conserving our precious and scarce water resources,” said Cromwell Williams, manager of the St. Kitts Water Services Department.

“As this year’s theme says, “Valuing Water,” we wish to remind the public that taking care of our water resources is the business of every member of our community,” Williams said.
Williams also shared some practical ways in which the public can partner with the Water Services Department in valuing water:

  1. Conserve! Conserve! Conserve!
  2. Monitor how much water you are using (it is stated on your bill); an average household should not be using more than 50 gallons per person per day.
  3. If you are using more than this, it is likely that you have a leak. Get a trained plumber or technician to investigate (the WSD can assist).
  4. Pay your water bill monthly. The last time water charges were increased was 2001. Water is very affordable.
  5. Avoid rearing animals, farming, or dwelling close to our wells which can pollute our groundwater.

The Water Services Department is guided by the motto: “Water is Life, Every Drop Counts.” The department looks forward to engaging with you during this month and beyond as we partner in taking care of our water resources.

The United Nations General Assembly by resolution adopted on 22 December 1992, declared 22 March of each year as World Water Day. Since 1993, World Water Day, 22 March is celebrated as an annual United Nations Observance focusing on the importance of freshwater.
