PM Harris to support St. Kitts National Domino Association tournament as a sponsor

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, April 20, 2021 (MMS-SKN) — After an eighteen-year hiatus, a successful St. Kitts National Domino Association tournament was held this year which saw twelve teams compete for top honours with the Spanish team, Los Fuertes del Domino overcoming the odds to claim the top honours.

Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, who was present at the closing and prize-giving ceremony held on Sunday April 18 at the New Town Community Centre, thanked the players from the twelve teams and the sponsors of the successful tournament informing the association that he will be entering as one of the sponsors of the tournament next year.

Sponsorship of domino tournaments, which Prime Minister Harris called the people’s sport, is not new to him as he is the sponsor of the longest running domino league in the country, if not the region, Constituency Number Seven Domino League. It will this year be hosting the 26th edition of its highly competitive tournament that last year attracted fourteen teams.

The St. Kitts National Domino Association tournament’s closing ceremony was chaired by Treasurer Mr Cremoy Agard, who gave an outline of the competition that involved twelve teams from around the island. The teams were Terminal Boyz, Newcomers II, Til Ah Marnin, Poor Man’s Pocket, Masters of Domino Art, Spartans Fig Tree, Los Fuertes del Domino, Eagle Claws, King Balang, Newcomers I, Latecomers, and Lodge.

Teams that reached the final four were Los Fuertes del Domino, Terminal Boyz, Masters of Domino Art, and Poor Man’s Pocket. In the first semi-final, Los Fuertes del Domino dispatched Poor Man’s Pocket in two straight games, while in the second semi-final Terminal Boyz beat Masters of Domino Arts in the first game, but were beaten in the next two games.

This therefore set the final between Masters of Domino Arts and Los Fuertes del Domino, where the Spanish team won two straight games in a best of three final games encounter.

The competition, which was meant to help with the selection of a St. Kitts team that will take part at future World Council of Domino Federation (WCDF) championships after an eighteen-year hiatus, was sponsored by the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis – Platinum Sponsor, First Federal Credit Union, Best For Less Trading Ltd, The Craft House, NAGICO Insurances, and Carib Brewery.

Information from the St. Kitts National Domino Association has it that while the World Council of Domino Federation champions due to have been held in Antigua later this year will not take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a total 39 players were named for a boot camp, with Newcomers I Domino Club having the largest number of players – a total of seven.

It is followed by Poor Man Pocket Domino Club with six players, Terminal Boyz Domino Club (5), Masters of Domino Art Domino Club (5), Los Fuertes del Domino (4), Eagle Claws Domino Club (3), Spartans Fig Tree Domino Club (2), Til A Marnin Domino Club (2), Lodge Domino Club (2), King Balang Domino Club (2), Newcomers II Domino Club (1), while Latecomers Domino Club did not produce any player.

Platinum sponsor, Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis, was represented at the closing and prize-giving ceremony by Marketing and Product Development Officer, Ms Chantelle Rochester, who noted that the financial institution appreciated the hosting of sporting activities as they bring communities together, noting that the Bank is committed to providing a sustained difference in peoples’ lives whether socially or financially.

Other sponsors represented at the ceremony were Best For Less Trading Ltd, by Manager Mr Anand Samtani, and First Federal Credit Union by, Member Services Officer Ms Sarafina Osborne, all who assisted with the distribution of trophies to the players.
