PM HARRIS PARTICIPATES IN CARICOM HEADS MEETING TO APPOINT NEW SECRETARY-GENERAL OF CARICOM SECRETARIAT

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 11, 2021 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister)ย – Two female candidates from Belize and Suriname are shortlisted for consideration for the post of Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to succeedย outgoing Ambassador Irwin LaRocque.ย 

Deliberations on the successor for Ambassador LaRocque were done during the Twenty-first Special Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) held today, Tuesday, May 11. 

Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris has endorsed the recommendation of the Community Council for Dr. Carla Barnett of Belize to be appointed to the post. 

Prime Minister Harris said it will be a historic moment when a leading integrationist in Dr. Barnett becomes the first female to head the regional body. 

The St. Kitts and Nevis prime minister also thanked the outgoing Ambassador Irwin LaRocque for his years of outstanding and meritorious service to CARICOM. 

Ambassador LaRocque has held the office of Secretary-General of CARICOM from August 15, 2011.
