BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, August 27, 2021 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris today (Friday, August 27) accepted a financial contribution from the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), through its Embassy in Basseterre, that will go towards the advancement of the Federation’s social infrastructure.

The financial grant was presented to Prime Minister Harris by the Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency Michael Lin, during a brief ceremony at the prime minister’s Government Headquarters office.

Ambassador Lin, in presenting the cheque to the prime minister, said his Government is proud to again partner with the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis. The ambassador further reassured Prime Minister Harris of his Government’s commitment to continue assisting the development of the Federation in any way it can.

Prime Minister Harris in response said this investment in the continued development of St. Kitts and Nevis by the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) is indicative of the strong and mutual bilateral relationship shared between both nations.

“As we attempt, notwithstanding the COVID-19 pandemic, to continue the progress in our country and continue to ensure that the Government acts in a way and provides support to the vulnerable in the community,  we could count on our good friend Taiwan to assist us in this regard,” the prime minister said.

“Today another contribution has been made to assist us in the build-out of our social infrastructure and we are indeed grateful. This project, once completed, will bring additional relief and comfort to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis so it’s a very special one for the people and a very special one for the Government on a whole,” Prime Minister Harris added.

In this regard, the honorable prime minister expressed to Ambassador Lin profound gratitude on behalf of the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis for the continued generosity demonstrated by the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

He said, “Through you Ambassador, I want you to convey to your principal in Taipei the ongoing strong support and good wishes of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis. Taiwan’s involvement in the society is felt and well appreciated.”

The Governments of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China (Taiwan) formally established diplomatic relations in 1983, and since then the twin-island Federation has benefited from Taiwan’s support in many areas of cooperation, particularly in the fields of agriculture and agro-processing, ICT, health and education.
