Non-sponsored areas of study by the Government of St. Kitts & Nevis
Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 4, 2021 (Human Resource Management Department): The Human Resource Management Department as the engine of the Public/Civil Service is charged with several mandates, Human Resource Development being of utmost importance. As such, much of the matters related to training, whether it be long-term, short–term, in-house, local, regional or international are managed by the same.
Over the years the Government of St. Kitts & Nevis has forged relationships with several regional and international organizations that have been offering scholarships to our nationals for which we have been very grateful. The government has also forged relationships with other institutions which require a portion of student funding to come from its own purse.
The Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis continues to increase its presence in the global market via its continued commitment to human resource development through access to higher education and learning.
However, the maintenance of the marketability of our people requires keeping up with changes in the global market in every aspect, education being top priority. This means that we would need to revisit our priority training list on a regular basis. The Human Resource Management Department is currently in the process of reviewing the current National Priority Areas list as it has become apparent that there is a saturation of several areas of studies with diminishing return on investment. These areas are General Medicine, Law, Business Management/Administration and Hospitality/Tourism Management (General), Political Science, Marketing. A large number of persons who would have earned degrees in these areas either remain unemployed as the market is not large enough to absorb them and very few are willing to risk business ownership.
It is not the intent of the Human Resource Management Department to deny anyone the opportunity for advancement, but it is also necessary to look at the greater picture which is national development; therefore, the need to remove these areas from the priority listing. Please note, however, special grants to requests for assistance in these areas may be given in situations if:
- The applicant is a scholar (attending UWI) and affordability requires economic cost assistance
- The applicant is minoring or concentrating on one of the areas listed on the National Priority Areas list
- Special scholarships are offered only in these areas
- The area of study is being pursued at graduate levels with a specific field focus
