Life in St Kitts – Nevis has changed permanently. It is time for us to face the fact and all that it means for us.

Here are some things we should pay attention to:

– Our Tourism Industry has changed and has new normals. It may be a very long time before we see the high numbers of visitors engaging with tours like before Covid -19. For now, that is the past. We need to let go of what was, and work hard for what we need the newly changed Tourism industry to be for us.

– Any major or minor event that affects the shipping industry will significantly impact us here in St. Kitts – Nevis. This simply means that food shortage is one or two or three missed shipments away from our doorsteps. How long since we have been out of things like Sunquick? Recently white sugar was out of stock and the supermarkets that were able to sell had increased prices per pound. If you ask any suppliers about shipping they will tell you that the shortage of supplies is becoming a major issue. Because of the shortages, many of them are unable to get the quantity of goods necessary for them to properly restock. Small Shops are already complaining that the demand for foodstuffs is becoming a problem from suppliers such as Rams and Val U Mart. Another thing I have noticed is the change of brands such as Dutch Lady Milk and Kelloggs Corn Flakes. Soon, I believe we will see larger countries holding onto their food and goods supplies. Where will that leave us out here?

Can you recall in 2020 when many supermarkets shelves were empty? What happened to prices thereafter? Lots of prices increased by a lot.

What will happen if the Tropical vessel is unable to reach our shores? What are we going to eat? Here is where we must bridge the gap between local demand and local supply. It is time we look at a realistic plan for Agriculture.  This plan has to include provisions for the production of mutton, beef, and pork, as well as fruits and vegetables. If nothing else, we have to be able to feed ourselves and not just look at the case of something like this pandemic ever occurs again.

Let us continue to plant and raise animals which will help boost the road to recovery. The fishery also plays a major part in this recovery.
