BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FROM all indications at a recent public meeting, it is evident that the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) is in election mode and a change in its leadership would follow sometime after the 2020 Federal Election.
Speaking at a public meeting in Cayon last Thursday night (Sept. 5), leader of the SKNLP the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas called on Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris to “ring the bell”, while claiming that election must be held by February next year.
However, the most revealing announcement made was when Dr. Said that he would lead the party into the next election and after that hand over the reins to Dr. Drew.
In his own inimitable style, Dr. Douglas boasted of being the best teacher of politics in the Caribbean and that Dr. Drew is one of his students.
“Dr. Drew has had the best teacher ever in politics in the Caribbean, Denzil Douglas…What you expect, he must be the best! The best teacher will produce the best student. And so you are responsible my dear people for producing this politician of class, leader of class, Dr. Terrance Drew.
“He is today one of the leaders of our party, senior position in our party, the Chairman of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party. And that is why I say to you, DR, Drew is on his way to be the MP, the Member of Parliament for Constituency Number Eight. And Dr. Drew will become a senior minister in the new Douglas-led administration here in St. Kitts and Nevis.”
He proclaimed that the coming election would be his last.
“It is my last election, the last election is this one, I and I will move on. That is what the Labour Party does. It has a succession plan for our future, leading our party and leading our country as well.
“And I say to you therefore that I know I have men and women who are capable of taking the mantle of leadership from me whenever I leave after this election.”
At that point, Dr. Douglas declared: “Dr. Drew is going to lead you, especially with our health sector agenda…”
