DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER RICHARDS SAYS GOVERNMENT INTENDS TO EXPAND POWER GENERATION THROUGH RENEWABLE RESOURCES
Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 16, 2022 (SKNIS):Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Infrastructure, Honourable Shawn Richards, saidthe Team Unity Administration intends to expand power generation through renewable resources.
Deputy Prime Minister Richards during his presentation at the launch of the National Determined Contribution (NDC) Implementation Plan at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort on April 12, stated that these renewable resources of energy can be achieved through solar, rooftop, utility-scale power, wind, and geothermal.
He said, “To do this, establishing and enabling policy and regulatory frameworks and securing investments in renewable technologies are needed to accelerate renewable energy penetration.”
“The energy sector here in St. Kitts of which I have oversight contributes ninety percent of the greenhouse gas emissions, sixty percent from the burning of diesel for electricity production and thirty percent from gasoline and diesel for transportation,” he said.
He also said that it gives him great pride to speak about the various strides the Federation has made thus far to advance renewable energy.
The Minister of Public Infrastructure said thatsome of the Federation’s responsible corporate entities have already demonstrated their willingness to lead this by jumping on the renewable energy train.
“Since 2010, two of our largest trading companies, TDC and SL Horsfords have installed in excess of 1.5 megawatts of solar PV between them. We have commissioned a 0.75 megawatts solar farm at the airport, a 0.5 megawatts solar farm for Skelec and a 1.0-megawatt solar farm at ECCB,” said Deputy Prime Minister Richards.
