Physical Education Summer workshop article
Basseterre: St. Kitts, Wednesday, August 31, 2022: Physical Education teachers across
secondary schools in St. Kitts are participating in the annual Summer Workshops organized by
the Ministry of Education. The workshop which started on Tuesday, August 30 and ends Friday,
September 02 is designed to provide teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge in their
respective subject areas.
Chief Education Officer Mr. Francil Morris exclaimed, “Therefore over the next four days you
[teachers] will be provided with the necessary actions needed to ensure that all our students can
achieve their full potential which sees them eventually making a positive impact on our
community.”
Registering their satisfaction with the workshop thus far, the teachers communicated:
“The workshop has been very satisfying. It taught us a lot about PE [Physical Education] and
about the new technologies that are being implemented in the world of education. Education is
not only physical when it comes to PE, but it is also technological and also structural. We learnt
a lot on how to impact students not only physically and mentally, but also emotionally,” teacher
Shinelle McCalla of the Basseterre High School saidn“The workshop for the past two days is going well, both the practical and theoretical aspect. The things that I learnt, I’m planning to implement them as early as possible in the upcoming term to improve my sessions from last school year,” expressed teacher Donroy Liburd of Cayon High School.
Noting his biggest take away from the session Mr. Lawson Webb of the Charles E. Mills
Secondary School expressed “Last school year I wasn’t teaching any form one classes, so I didn’t know much about the new Enhanced Curriculum and these sessions have opened my eyes to the different strategies and pedagogies that we can put into practice in the upcoming school year. Thus my biggest take away was that the information was new so it’s interesting going forward in my plans for Physical
Education in the new school year”.
Alberto Hewlett stated, “My biggest take away will be the structuring that we were given by Ms.
Sutton. A lot of times we have different methods but we are unable to put names to the method
that we have been using so we were able to structure what we already know much better.”
The teachers all agreed that they would definitely implement what they have learnt into their
classroom activities.
“During this workshop that was main the focus, how to implement what we learnt and bring it back to the students so that the students can be more comfortable while participating in Physical Education. We learnt how to bring the theory into the practical and how to bring the practical into the theory. What stuck most with me was having the game sessions where we can modify the game according to the students and their abilities,” Ms. McCalla stated.
The Physical Education workshop was hosted by Ms. Michelle Sutton, Health and Wellbeing
Coordinator in the Curriculum Development Unit.
